03.05.11 Just uploaded a track for free download here. This is an alternate version of the Hungarian tune "Regen Volt, Soka Lesz" that was originally on the Death of Last Year's Man e.p. This second version is quite a bit more blasted out than the first and was recorded for a compilation that sort of fell through. Enjoy.

01.16.11 New Hala Strana release Compendium is now available via download only. This is a compilation of unreleased, e.p., 7", and bonus tracks that were recorded between 2002 and 2007. Also posted on the download page is the 14 minute solo piece "A Sun Enshrouded by Moths" from the Invisible Pyramid compilation. See the Downloads page for details.

12.31.10 We're beginning to finally get some music available in downloadable formats. See the Downloads page for details. Yes, obviously most of this is available elsewhere on the web for free, but at least here, it's all located in one place, we can offer higher quality formats in addition to MP3's, and any money earned helps support the creation of more music (i.e. offsets recording costs, helps fix broken gear, etc.) We're starting with Tableland, Kohl, and Antimony and will follow with more as soon as we can. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to post unreleased music here and other surprises as well.

11.09.10 Not much news. Lots of new music coming down the pike in 2011. There's been some delays with the etching portion of the Floor of the Sky one-sided LP. 10.01.08 Live solo performance to be aired on radio WFMU on Oct. 12th between midnight-3 am EST (Oct. 11th @ 9pm-midnight PST). You should be able to listen online at www.wfmu.org or if you miss the show it should be archived in the playlist section for DJ Daniel Blumin. Also: Ulaan Khol II should hit the stores and mail orders in December; and the Jewelled Antler Library is being reissued by the good folks at Porter Records in December as well. This 4-CD box set brings together all 12 installments of the library together and I believe is limited to 1,000 copies so you may want to try and pre-order a copy from Porter Records if you're interested. Pointing in a new direction, this recording is a sparse, electric guitar based recording featuring vocals/lyrics throughout the recording. Packaged with a beautiful, two-color print on a light blue cardstock "wallet" slipcase by famed printers Stumptown Press of Oregon.

05.17.07 The wood cover version of Heave the Gambrel Roof is out of print at the label and here on the site, but Aquarius Records (www.aquariusrecords.org) still have copies at this point. CD pre-orders and the screen printed cardstock cover version of the LP are currently available through Music Fellowship (www.musicfellowship.com). We should get copies of the CD and cardstock LP to sell through the site here soon.

05.12.07 The new Hala Strana release Heave the Gambrel Roof is now available on LP. The CD version should appear in a couple weeks. The LP is currently available with screenprinted wood covers with a chapbook. These are already sold out at the label but they can still be ordered from Aquarius Records (www.aquariusrecords.org). We currently have just a handful of the wood cover version here, but please email for availability before ordering. When the wood covers run out there will be a more streamlined LP version on heavy cardstock which are already available through the Music Fellowship label (www.musicfellowship.com). CD pre-orders area also happening at Music Fellowship.

03.07.07 The vinyl version of the new Hala Strana release Heave the Gambrel Roof should be available shortly. The test pressings have arrived and the covers have been printed. The cd version will be released sometime shortly after the lp version. Here's the scoop on the lp packaging: the first 250 copies will feature a screen print on a 12" square veneer of wood and will feature an 8-page chapbook. The second 250 copies will be printed on heavy weight cardstock but will not have the chapbook, for a total of 500 lp copies. The cd version will come in a standard jewel case. We'll have 50 copies of the chapbook available separately here for those who purchased a cd or one of the cardstock lps who still want a chapbook. Stay tuned... Also, a box of From Ashes Come cds were found in a friend's closet up in San Francisco so I now have a handful of those in stock, see the contact/items for sale page to order....

08.24.06 Steven R. Smith The Anchorite LP will be released on Sept. 26th, 2006 on Important Records. This will be limited to 500 copies, each cover screenprinted on heavy cardstock and then mounted with a hand-printed linocut in various colors (each signed and numbered as part of Important's Arts and Crafts Series). The music for this recording was recorded live to stereo 2-track without overdubs in Winter 2005. These will be available though the record label (www.importantrecords.com), the usual record stores and mail order, and I should have a few to sell through this site as well. Check back in a couple weeks....Also in the works--as soon as I can find the time we will hopefully get a page on here featuring original linocut prints which will be for sale. These will be two-color, original-sized prints of some of the linocuts that have been featured in the some of the recent and upcoming records and chapbooks. Email for more info.....

05.02.06 Hala Strana limited lathe 7 inch White Sleep is now available. This is a very limited (60 copies) lathe 7 inch cut by lathe guru Peter King in New Zealand with hand colored covers and is available through Soft Abuse (www.softabuse.com). These will not be available through this site so please contact Soft Abuse if you are interested in ordering. It features three songs including a cover of Dog Faced Hermans "Dream Forever".

10.29.05 Solo LP reissue Kohl has arrived and is available from midheaven mailorder (www.midheaven.com), various independent record stores, and from this website while supplies last. This is a vinyl reissue of the CDr released on Jewelled Antler in 2002 and contains a handmade book, woodcut insert, and silkscreened covers, limited to 400 copies.

05.30.05 New solo release Crown of Marches will be released on Catsup Plate in late June if all goes well. This one 40-minute track will be packaged in a cardstock digipak with silkscreened artwork. The latest Thuja release will be a two disc set entitled Pine Cone Temples and will be released on Strange Attractors in August.

05.12.05 Solo perfomance aired live 05.10.05 on "Phoning it in" on BSR 88.1 FM Providence, Rhode Island. This performance can be listened to via the BSR archive available here. As the title of the show suggests, the performance was recorded over the phone and is about 30 minutes long, featuring both solo and Hala Strana material and some improvisations all kind of jumbled together.

02.26.05 New solo recording finished and mixed consisting of one 40-minute track entitled "Crown of Marches", predominately electric guitar, a bit heavier than previous fare. Not sure when and where this will surface......The Kohl vinyl reissue on Emperor Jones is in the works, jackets have been ordered and received, artwork being designed for silkscreening, record mastered and should be pressed soon. Featured as Volume 10 in the Jewelled Antler Library series will be a 3" CD-r from Thuja entitled Fable and is available at www.jewelledantler.com. Upcoming in 2004: re-issues of the solo guitar recording Kohl on LP from Emperor Jones and Hala Strana's Fielding on double CD including a 13+ minute bonus track on Last Visible Dog.

11.04.03 The double CD-r + book limited release by Hala Strana, Fielding is now out of print. A re-issue on 2xCD is planned for release on Last Visible Dog in 2004. Thuja's All Strange Beasts of the Past on Emperor Jones will be out on Nov. 17th.

07.19.03 The Hala Strana self-titled full-length release on Emperor Jones has been delayed because of distribution problems, but in its place is a Hala Strana double CD-r release + hand-made book entitled Fielding which will be available on Jewelled Antler in a limited edition in just a few weeks. This is a dense mixture of original tunes, field recordings, and covers of traditional songs with musical contributions from Glenn Donaldson, Loren Chasse, Darren Ankenman, and Steve Hanson.

04.20.03 The first Hala Strana release, a 3" cd e.p. entitled Karst, is out now on Jewelled Antler as part of their Jewelled Antler Library series. It includes musical contributions from Glenn Donaldson and Loren Chasse.

11.15.02 A new solo cd-r + book entitled Kohl has been released on the Jewelled Antler label and is available through Aquarius Records mailorder. Kohl will also be released as a limited edition lp + book & woodcut print in mid 2003 on Emperor Jones.
